No Falls - A program of falls reduction exercises for older people
Area Serviced: Moira

The NoFalls exercise program was designed by the Monash University Accident Research Centre. Balance can be improved through challenging the balance systems and practising balance strategies, and by improving strength and flexibility.  The course emphasises:

  • Muscle extensibility, and to a lesser degree, joint flexibility.
  • Strength of muscles critical for posture and balance.
  • Proprioception (through the use of rockerboards).
  • Visual and vestibular stimulation (eye tasks).
  • Reaction time (rockerboards and group work).
  • Relearning the elements of a balance task.

Additionally healthcare professionals in the local community present fall risk prevention strategies to the participants. This includes a podiatrist (foot care, foot wear), an optometrist (poor vision), occupational therapist (home hazards), and a dietitian (nutrition).

This is a 15 week course held in Yarrawonga & Cobram in the winter months. The time the course is held varies. To participate participants must be 65 years or older, have recently fallen or have a fear of falling.  Priority is given to current Home & Community Care (HACC) clients however anyone eligible will be considered. Physician consent is required to participate in this program.
